An Accidental Delight

We had the most delicious dessert yesterday.  It started out as a cookie dough gone wrong, but with a little improvisation, ended up as one of the best desserts I have ever made.  I call it Oreo Custard Pie. You will find instruction on how to make this delectable dish below.  Pay special attention to Step 5; it is imperative to the success of your dessert.

Oreo Custard Pie

Step 1:  Plan on having friends over for Sunday dinner.  This helps to add to your stress level.

Step 2:  Finalize your menu on Saturday.  Have the idea that you will serve a graham cracker and pudding pie for dessert.

Step 3:  Have your husband come home from work on Saturday and tell you that he wants a cookie.  Be a good wife and decide to make some for him and for your primary class in the morning.

Step 4:  Mix up homemade oreo cookie dough, but forget that it is best made in a stand mixer and try to mix it by hand.  It doesn't work very well.  Also, don't add quite as much fat as it calls for just because you are too lazy to actually measure and decide to just eyeball it.

Step 5:  Get mad at your husband.  He's the one that wants the cookies, yet he refuses to help you make them.  You refuse, then, to help him and completely halt the cookie production.  Cover the bowl of cookie dough with plastic wrap, stick it in the fridge, and storm off to the bedroom.

Step 6:  The next morning, wake up early so that you have enough time to make the cookies before church.  After you've pulled the dough out of the fridge, notice that it is a little crumbly and does not want to form cookies like it should.

Step 7:  Add some water to the dough to try to make it stick together better.  This just makes the dough super sticky on your fingers and a little slimy to the touch.

Step 8:  Lose your patience with this stupid cookie idea because you are tired and you hate making cookies anyway.  Brainstorm for a minute and decide that instead of a graham cracker crust with your pie that night, you'll make a cookie crust instead.

Step 9:  Spray your pie pan and hands with cooking oil so that the dough is a little more manageable. Press the dough into the pan and up the sides and stick it in the oven to bake.

Step 10:  Decide that putting pudding in your pie with the cookie crust would be far too sweet.  Come up with the idea to replace the pudding with the custard you keep in your cupboard for such emergency dessert cases.  Put the custard on the stove to cook.

Step 11:  Once the custard is ready, pour it into your cookie crust.  Set the pie to cool in the fridge while you go to church and prepare the rest of dinner.

Step 12:  Have your friends come to your house and eat an otherwise well-prepared and well-planned meal.

Step 13:  When it is time for dessert, whip up some whipping cream and pull out the few varieties of frozen fruit you have in your freezer to top your pie with.  Serve it to your guests and hope that it is edible.

Step 14:  Discover that you have somehow managed to make the most incredible dessert you have ever had.

Enjoy!

Homemade Oreo Cookie Dough Crust

1 Devil's Food cake mix
2 eggs
1 cup shortening

Mix all ingredients together (use a stand mixer for best results).  Divide into 2 and press each half into a pie pan.  Bake at 350 for about 12 minutes.

Make as directed on packaging for the pudding, not the sauce.

Ha Ha. Love you! and miss you! I especially loved #5! But honestly, who has custard waiting in the cupboard for just such an emergency?
